What is a Fictitious Trade Name / Registration for DBA?
What is a Fictitious Trade Name / Registration for DBA?
Updated over 3 weeks ago

Fictitious Trade Name / DBA (Doing Business As) Registration is required when a business operates under a name different from its legally registered name. This applies to names used on websites, marketing materials, or signage. Each distinct public-facing name requires a separate DBA filing.

Even if a DBA is not formally registered, using a different business name in public (e.g., on a website or signage) still necessitates a DBA filing. If customers recognize your business under a different name, it qualifies for a DBA per SBA SOP regulations.

The document should include:

  • Business name and DBA name

  • Registration number and filing date

  • Proof that the DBA filing is current and not expired
